When first designing this project we looked to commercial manufacturers to supply the pumps, however we needed more precision and a guarantee of food safety while keeping cost lower. Thus, we decided to design our own pump to ensure a precise amount of fluid would enter each of the drinks. We decided to use a peristaltic pump (where the liquid never leaves the tubing) to ensure that the fluid would not get contaminated by any of the pump components. In order to achieve a high tolerance needed to ensure a long component life, we decided to SLA print each of the eight pumps on the Carbon 3D printer. The pump we designed is currently used by Jacobs Hall as a model of “best design practices” for Carbon 3D!
